In the latest episode of The Dale Jr. Download, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn’t hold back in his criticism of Trackhouse Racing after their handling of Shane van Gisbergen’s debut at Dover International Speedway. Van Gisbergen, a dominant force in road course racing, entered his first oval race with a great deal of hype, but things quickly went south as he struggled throughout the race.

Van Gisbergen, who had shown impressive performances in road course events this season, was expected to bring a fresh level of excitement to the Cup Series, especially with the increasing attention on his transition to oval racing. Starting from the sixth position, Van Gisbergen’s hopes were high as he looked to make a statement in his first full oval race. However, the race unfolded in a disappointing manner, with the driver facing multiple obstacles.
The first of these setbacks occurred early in the race, just 11 laps in, when van Gisbergen reported issues with his right-front tire. Upon inspection, it was revealed that the tire had only eight pounds of air pressure, forcing the team to make an unscheduled pit stop. This dropped van Gisbergen several laps behind the leaders and shattered any hopes of a meaningful result for the remainder of the race.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. wasted no time in voicing his frustrations with Trackhouse Racing’s handling of the situation. He pointed out that despite van Gisbergen’s immense talent and success on road courses, the car itself did not measure up on the oval, with van Gisbergen’s car ranking only 31st in terms of speed. This stark contrast in performance left Earnhardt Jr. questioning the overall preparation and competitiveness of Trackhouse Racing in this crucial race.
“I think they really need to step up and get a more competitive car under Shane if they want to have a shot at advancing later in the season,” Earnhardt Jr. said. He further emphasized that with the upcoming elimination rounds, Trackhouse Racing cannot afford to overlook these issues if they want to make it into the Round of 16.
As the race progressed, van Gisbergen struggled to regain his lost laps, and by the time the checkered flag waved, he was relegated to the back of the pack. His debut, once filled with promise, ended in insignificance as the track proved to be a tough challenge for the rookie driver. With only a handful of races left in the season, questions linger about whether van Gisbergen will be able to overcome these challenges and find his footing in the competitive NASCAR field.
Trackhouse Racing, known for its aggressive approach to developing young drivers, will have to take a long, hard look at how it approaches these high-stakes races if it wants to make sure its drivers are fully prepared. As Earnhardt Jr. pointed out, every race counts, especially when it comes to the playoff picture. If Trackhouse Racing doesn’t find a way to elevate its performance, both van Gisbergen’s future and the team’s prospects this season could be in jeopardy.
With high expectations set for this season, both the team and van Gisbergen are now faced with the tough task of bouncing back from this setback and making necessary improvements before the pressure mounts even further in the weeks ahead.
