The Philadelphia Phillies’ beloved mascot, the Phillie Phanatic, has done it again — stealing the spotlight in the most hilarious way possible. During Tuesday night’s home game at Citizens Bank Park, the Phanatic cheekily reenacted the now-infamous Coldplay Kiss Cam controversy, leaving the crowd in stitches and social media roaring with laughter.
The moment came during a break in the third inning when the stadium’s Kiss Cam segment began rolling on the big screen. As fans looked around nervously — or hopefully — the Phanatic suddenly appeared on screen with a cardboard cutout of Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin taped to one side, and a “mystery fan” mannequin on the other.
With exaggerated flair, the Phanatic leaned toward the Chris Martin cutout, then paused dramatically — mimicking the awkward hesitation seen in the viral Coldplay kiss cam video that made headlines just last week. After a few seconds of comedic indecision, the mascot turned and “kissed” the mannequin instead, recreating the drama with perfect comic timing.
Fans erupted in laughter, many pulling out their phones to capture the spoof. Within minutes, clips of the skit were trending online under hashtags like #PhanaticColdplayCam and #MascotOfTheYear.
If you’re unfamiliar with the original controversy, it unfolded during a Coldplay concert at MetLife Stadium when a Kiss Cam moment between Chris Martin and his rumored girlfriend became a painfully awkward viral clip — showing him dodging a kiss, sparking breakup rumors and endless memes.
Phillies fans appreciated the jab, with one user on X (formerly Twitter) writing: “The Phanatic has more emotional range than half of Hollywood. Give this mascot an Emmy.”
The Phillies’ social media team also joined in, posting the video with the caption:
“When you’ve seen one too many awkward kiss cam moments… leave it to the Phanatic to make it iconic.”
This isn’t the first time the Phillie Phanatic has used pop culture moments for laughs, but this Coldplay spoof might just be one of the mascot’s most unforgettable acts yet.
As for Chris Martin? No official response — but knowing his sense of humor, he’s probably laughing along too.
